Breaking Bad's Twelve Greatest Scenes: Number 10

Number 10: Jesse meets Jane.

Season 2, Episode 5 “Breakage”

Jane
Krysten Ritter as Jane Margolis

During the first eleven episodes of Breaking Bad we had seen Jesse Pinkman do a lot, but we still hadn’t seen him try to spit game. However, in the Season 2 episode “Breakage” we get the amusing and almost tender scene where Jesse meets Jane Margolis. In the early part of Season 2, Jesse finds himself homeless after his parents kick him out of his Aunt’s house. With no place to crash, Jesse finds an apartment for rent. Jesse is shown the apartment by Jane, a statuesque brunette who lives in the adjacent apartment and manages the property for her father. During the apartment tour, Jesse tries to flirt with Jane and the two have a nice back and forth going. Jesse even tries to impress her by bragging about having an entire house before. As well, we even get the classic scene of Jesse accidentally turning on the garbage disposal and the priceless “what a moron face” Jane gives to Jesse in response. Jesse is a fan of the apartment’s hardwood floors and washer/dryer, so he decides he wants the place. However, Jane then asks him for a W-2, recent paystub, and other information on his current employer. When Jesse responds by telling her he can’t provide that information, but can pay with cash, Jane give Jesse a disapproving look and tells Jesse to "Go run your game somewhere else." Jesse then pleas with Jane, a plea that’s both earnest while at the same time intending to charm, asking her to just give him a chance. Jane against her better judgment agrees, but requires he pay a “Don’t be an Asshole Fee” of two additional months’ rent upfront.

Although there are certainly many more important scenes than this one, I’m putting Jesse and Jane’s meeting on this list simply because of how much fun it is. For a show as dark and serious as Breaking Bad, I loved how the writers threw in a little romantic comedy angle during its second season. Aaron Paul and Krysten Ritter have great chemistry in this scene. Although Jane realizes Jesse is a low-life drug dealer, she also recognizes how charismatic and funny he can be. As well, this scene finally allows Jesse gets to drop his usual pretend tough-guy/ drug dealer act and just be his engaging self.  Of course, we find out later that Jesse and Jane are both toxic for each other. However, that only gives this scene a little more poignancy.
